Plain bearings, also known as
bushings, are mechanical elements used to reduce friction between the rotating
shaft and stationary support members. As a rule, the bushing supports the
rotating shaft of the hardened shaft journal using soft metal or plastic and
oil film. Plain bearings are mainly used in machines with rotating or sliding
shaft components. Plain bearings, also known as journal bearings, sleeve
bearings or sliding bearings, have no rolling elements. Some are made of
relatively soft metal, such as Babbit, to protect the shaft axis. It is also
made of other materials, depending on the application and loading requirements.
Different bushings can be used to align templates in drilling operations.
Plain bearing type:-
1. Hydrodynamics and irregular journal bearings:-
A common application of journal
bearings is to support the engine crankshaft as shown on the right. The highly
polished surface of the forge shown is a journal of main bearings and
connecting rod bearings. The main bearing itself is mounted
on the crankcase. The main bearing is made of lower and upper layers. It is
installed in the mechanized part of the crankcase casting. The main motor
bearings work mainly in hydrodynamic regimes. That is, under normal conditions,
the stump and the bearing are separated by oil wedges formed as the shaft
rotates. The oil is pumped to the bearings through a supply hole that
distributes the oil to the main and connecting rod bearings. Journal bearings
are used in large industrial turbo machines such as compressors and turbines.
Many bearings in this service are hydrostatic, so the shaft can be supported by
a film of oil without turning. Sometimes, the bearing is divided and the
bearing is inclined, as shown in the figure on the right, which can suppress
the phenomenon known as swirl or whip shaft. The common form of tilting pad
bearings is used as thrust bearings in large turbo machines. As a general rule,
the surfaces of these bearings are lined with barbits. Babbitt is a relatively
soft white metal that supports the lubrication of the fluid film while
providing a relentless surface when in contact with a hardened shaft journal.
Automotive engine bearings are often made of bronze. These oversized journal
bearings have a split design similar to the main motor bearings, which can
often eliminate large rotors for maintenance.
2. Sleeve Bearings:-
Although, in principle, it is
similar to hydrodynamics and sliding bearings, sleeve bearings are also used
for linear movement, which is approximately equal to the frequency used for
rotational movement. The terms "bearing" and "bushing"
are used interchangeably to describe these mechanical elements. Hydrodynamics
and friction bearings often mean quite sophisticated systems such as
lubrication systems, but sleeve bearings can be relatively simple pressure
devices that are used in a variety of applications, from guide post bushings to
wheel bearings. Sleeve bearings are often made of sintered or cast bearing
bronze, sometimes filled with lubricating plugs such as graphite, such as the
left bearing. Many different types of plastic are used in sleeve bearings. Sleeve
bearings come in two basic styles: a flat cylindrical version that rinses into
the component and a flange style that features a compressed component and
provides a support surface for axial loading. Some manufacturers call the
"sleeve" bearings of electronic type, the latter are called "flange"
bearings.
3.Spherical bearings:-
Spherical bearings allow angular
rotation between links, control arms, etc. It is a rolling element bearing that
is separated from spherical roller bearings and is covered by the bearing
family. Typically, for spherical bearings, the internal spherical tracks rotate
at an angle within the limits of the outer race, while grease, PTFE, etc. They
provide a layer of lubrication between the sliding surfaces. In very demanding
applications, such as aerospace control links, a small ball bearing rolls
between the inner and outer rings, which produces very low friction. Spherical
bearings are not designed to handle rotation by themselves, but often as the
link moves through the range, the connected parts rotate and angled together.
Perhaps the most common application of spherical bearings is at the end of the
bar.
4.Drill template bushing:-
The drilling template bushes
provide a drill guide during precision metal drilling operations and are
usually available in individual pressure-adjusted parts or regenerated
two-piece parts using replaceable liners. This type of bushing is more useful
for guiding than the support and is made of harder steel than the bushing
designed to function as a bearing. It is generally very robust to maintain the
precision required for machining operations.
Bushing and Bearings-Applications and industry:-
Unlike bearings designed with a
finite lifespan in mind, plain bearings that rely on total fluid lubrication
can function theoretically indefinitely and are used in very important
applications where bearing failure can have serious consequences. For example,
dozens of different types of turbo machines include steam turbines and power
plant compressors that operate in critical pipe applications. Plain
bearings are also often used in low speed shaft applications, such as
marine propeller shafts. As mentioned, it is used almost exclusively in the
engine. Simple bearings stand out at the other end of the spectrum due to their
low cost and simplicity, and are suitable for intermittent motion applications
and, of course, linear motion. For such bearings, the material plays a wide
range, from sintered bronze impregnated with oil to thermoplastic designs that
can be dried with built-in lubricants. The latter often applies to food processing,
where the lubricant must be kept away from food. Plain bearings are often cast
in bronze or compressed into metal powder and impregnated with oils that
provide film lubrication. If you do not need the strength and performance of
metal bearings, you can use plastic bearings such as nylon, PTFE.
Considerations:-
The design of hydrodynamic
bearings takes into account the viscosity of the oil, the thickness of the oil
film, the coefficient of friction, the oil flow rate, the oil leakage, etc., in
addition to the axle load and speed parameters . Therefore, hydrodynamic
journal bearing designs rely heavily on the manufacturers of journal bearings
to provide journal bearings in sealed and lubricated housing units. Oil
lubrication is often provided using oil rings. Sleeve bearings are sized
according to pressure and speed considerations, which determines the so-called
PV limits. This represents the upper limit of pressure and coupling speed for a
given bushing material. The bearing is sized to operate below this threshold.
The calculation projects the delay area based on the internal radius and the
length. Some manufacturers identify maximum loads and speeds for individual
sleeve bearing sizes, so designers do not need to calculate them. Pressure
bearings are generally used to hold the bearings in place, so it is important
to mount plain bearings. Pressing the bearing in place distorts the shape of
the hole and causes problems in developing the fluid film profile, which causes
the bearing to wear quickly. The manufacturers of plain bearings can provide
instructions to ensure the correct operation of the bearings. Some bearings
require a rolling procedure, especially the so-called dry plastic bearings. The
grooving of the bearing is often performed to add cavities to lubricate the
bearing near the speed under the hydrodynamic regime. Many standard groove
patterns can be machined into standard bearings, ranging from circular,
straight or very simple loop cuts to complex combinations and multiples of
these simple shapes. Spherical bearings are selected according to the allowable
load and misalignment angle. The drilling template bushings are more concerned
with accuracy than the loads and are generally selected based on these
parameters.

Since many plain bearings apply
only to applications (motor bearings are an example), the intended application
may be a good property to find a bearing that suits your specific needs. On the
other hand, many plain bearings are universal and suitable for a variety of
bearing applications, in which case the search for geometry, materials, etc.,
will give better results.
Bearing type:-
If you are looking for spherical
bearings, choose here. Similarly, selecting a drilling template will return
bushings of that type. By choosing a sleeve or a journal as the type, you will
get almost the same result, since it is not necessarily an industry practice to
distinguish between journal bearings and sleeve bearings. In fact, bushings,
bush bearings, plain bearings, etc. They have almost the same meaning. A better
option for choosing a journal bearing of a completely fluid film type is to
choose the value of the Babbitt material which is returned by the supplier of
the fluid value bearing unit.
Type of bushing material:-
The choice of material for plain
bearings is much greater than that of ball and roller bearings, since it is
necessary to find a material that can support the development of oil films,
provide a smoother base than the shaft journals and provide a porous structure
that retains and releases oil. As with environmental conditions, speed plays an
important role in determining the material. Dry plastic caps are preferred in pharmaceutical
and food containers where they are considered potentially harmful if oil and
metal can contaminate the product. Wood can sometimes be used in marine
applications where water acts as a lubricant, not as oil. Babbitt is the
traditional material for hydrodynamic bearings used in turbo machines.
Materials for sleeve bearings often consist of bronze alloys, which include
aluminum, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, etc., which meet various lubrication
and strength requirements.
Production process:-
Many plain bearings are generated
by centrifugal casting. Continuous casting bars are often used to machine
bronze bearings. Sintered metal powder is another popular manufacturing method
for manufacturing oil impregnated bronze bearings.
